Common Causes of Poor Indoor Air Quality

Before diving into practical solutions for improving indoor air quality, it’s essential to understand the common causes of air pollution within the home. Being aware of these sources will help you address the problem more effectively and maintain a healthy living environment. Here are some typical contributors to poor indoor air quality:

  1. Contaminants: These can include dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores, and more, which accumulate in the air and on surfaces, leading to respiratory issues and allergies.
  2. Chemical Emissions: Household products such as cleaners, paints, and air fresheners can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), potentially causing adverse health effects.
  3. Inadequate Ventilation: Poorly ventilated spaces can lead to stale and contaminated air, as pollutants are unable to exit the home efficiently, impacting the air quality.

Practical Tips for Improving Your Indoor Air Quality

Now that we’ve covered the potential sources of poor indoor air quality, let’s explore some practical tips to maintain clean and healthy air in your Long Beach and Orange County home:

1. Regular Cleaning and Maintenance

Keeping your living space clean and tidy can significantly improve your indoor air quality. Regularly dust and vacuum surfaces, including floors, carpets, furniture, and vents, to eliminate contaminants. Wash bedding, curtains, and other fabrics frequently to remove allergens. Maintain your HVAC system by cleaning or replacing air filters as needed and scheduling routine professional maintenance.

2. Proper Ventilation

Ensure that your home is well-ventilated by using exhaust fans in moisture-prone areas such as the kitchen and bathroom. Open windows and doors when possible to promote air circulation and prevent contaminants from accumulating indoors. If necessary, consider installing an air exchange system to maintain fresh air supply and promote adequate airflow throughout your home.

3. Air Purification

Installing air purifiers can help remove pollutants from your home’s atmosphere, improving the overall air quality. Consider using HEPA filters or activated carbon filters, which effectively capture airborne particles and reduce VOC levels. Place air purifiers in high-traffic rooms and areas prone to pollutants for optimal results.

4. Mindful Use and Storage of Chemical Products

When using chemical-based household products, ensure proper ventilation and follow manufacturers’ instructions for safe use and storage. Opt for natural alternatives or low-VOC products wherever possible to limit chemical emissions in your home.

Professional Indoor Air Quality Services

While these practical tips can make a significant difference in enhancing your home’s indoor air quality, some situations may call for professional intervention:

1. Duct Cleaning

Over time, your HVAC ducts can accumulate dust, debris, and other pollutants, which then circulate throughout your home. Professional duct cleaning services can help eliminate these contaminants and improve your HVAC system’s overall performance, contributing to better indoor air quality.

2. Indoor Air Quality Assessments

Skilled technicians can conduct comprehensive indoor air quality assessments to identify and diagnose potential issues in your home. These evaluations typically involve measuring humidity levels, detecting mold, identifying VOC sources, and offering tailored recommendations to improve your home’s air quality.

3. HVAC System Upgrades

Installing or upgrading to more energy-efficient HVAC systems with advanced filtration capabilities can significantly enhance your indoor air quality. These advanced systems are designed to capture and eliminate pollutants while maintaining optimal comfort and energy efficiency in your home.

4. Sealing and Insulating Your Home

Air leaks and insufficient insulation can contribute to poor indoor air quality by allowing outdoor pollutants to enter the home. Proper sealing and insulation can help reduce the influx of contaminants and maintain a cleaner, healthier living environment.

The Benefits of Improved Indoor Air Quality

Enhancing your home’s indoor air quality offers numerous advantages for you and your family, including:

  1. Healthier Living Environment: Improved indoor air quality can reduce the risk of allergies, asthma attacks, and other respiratory issues, promoting a healthier and safer living space.
  2. Enhanced Comfort: Clean air can improve your sense of well-being and contribute to a more comfortable living environment.
  3. Increased HVAC Efficiency: Removing pollutants from your air and ensuring proper airflow can improve the efficiency of your HVAC system, prolonging its lifespan, and reducing energy costs.

Reviews

Real Customers. Real Experiences.

It was time to service the fan blower unit and had a pleasant experience again working with Glenn and his trainee George. I appreciated the time Glenn took to ensure George's work met the expectations that Glenn would have performed the job to. It's not often companies have seasoned experienced employees that can share their knowledge and experience with new staff. I hope Thomson keeps Glenn around for many more years!

Over the years, we've used Thomson to do major HVAC construction, equipment replacement and service. They are always very thorough, knowledgeable, considerate and the prices are fair. They have a lot of experienced technicians on their team and communicating with the office is easy. We get our system serviced every 6 months (very important) and they actually offer a monthly payment plan for that. I didn't take off a star (because they do offer a fantastic service), but it is difficult if something breaks during the weekend. They won't respond until offices open on Monday. But they will get you in as soon as possible and the service is great.

Very honest company and great customer service. It’s been a long time since we had our AC unit inspected and after all these years it’s still good to go and ready for summer! Ethan did a great job answering all my questions. Quick, efficient and very knowledgeable. Thanks Thomson!

Ethan was great and was very helpful in helping me understand the unit. He came out the same day I called and had parts on his truck to make the repairs right then and there. Ethan was very friendly and I would recommend him and Thomson Air Conditioning to anyone in the future.
