You protect your TV. What about your AC?
Most people plug their computer and TV into a surge protector without thinking twice. Your air conditioner is one of the most expensive pieces of equipment in your home, yet it often has no surge protection at all.
So should you put a surge protector on your AC? The short answer is yes. Here’s why.

Why surge protection matters more now
A few years ago, an AC surge protector wasn’t a big deal. Most contractors didn’t even think about them. Older systems were mostly simple on/off equipment with few sensitive electronics.
That has changed. Today’s inverter systems and other new technology rely on circuit boards to control compressor speed, fan speed, and efficiency. Those boards make modern systems quieter and more efficient, but they are also more vulnerable to power surges.
A single surge can damage a board and leave you without cooling. Replacing a control board can be expensive, especially in the middle of summer.
What an HVAC surge protector does
An HVAC surge protector is a small device installed at your AC equipment. It sits between the power supply and your system. When a voltage spike comes through, it diverts the extra energy away from the sensitive electronics inside your unit.
Power surges can come from lightning, utility grid switching, or large appliances cycling on and off. Many are small and happen without you noticing. Over time, even small surges can wear down electronic components.
Why we install one on every new system
Over the past year or so, supply houses and contractors like us have started recommending surge protectors to help equipment last longer. At Thomson AC, we now install one on every new system.
Already have a system without one? You don’t need to replace anything. We can add a surge protector to your existing equipment during a service visit or tune-up.
Frequently asked questions
Does my AC really need a surge protector?
If you have a newer or inverter system, yes. These systems depend on circuit boards that are sensitive to power surges.
Can I just use a regular plug-in surge protector?
No. Central AC systems are hardwired, so they need an HVAC-rated surge protector installed by a technician.
Can you add one to my existing system?
Yes. If your system doesn’t have one, adding it is an option. We can install it during your next service visit.
Does a surge protector replace regular maintenance?
No. It protects the electronics from power spikes. Your system still needs regular tune-ups to run efficiently.
