Adding a Second Quilt Head Unit to Your Existing Outdoor Unit

The short version

Last year we installed a Quilt in a friend’s master bedroom in Seal Beach. This year we went back and added a second head unit in his living room, and it connects to the same outdoor unit. That’s what makes these Quilt units so cool: you can bring comfort to another room without a second outdoor unit.

Why one outdoor unit matters

Adding a room is much simpler when the new head unit shares the outdoor unit you already have. Instead of setting new equipment outside the house, most of the outside work is tying the new refrigerant line set in with the existing one and running it to the unit.

In this Seal Beach job, that meant the master bedroom kept the comfort it already had, and the living room got its own head unit on the same system.

How the install went, step by step

1. Measure and mount. We measure everything, get it level and straight, then set anchors in the wall for the mounting plate.
2. Cut the hole for the refrigerant pipes. We slope it just right so condensation drains out.
3. Center the unit. In this install, we lined it up over the existing picture frame hanger so it sits cleanly on the wall.
4. Run the line set outside. The pipes go down the exterior wall, we cut and stick on the back plate, and we tie the new line set in with the old one and run it to the outdoor unit. Everything gets zip-tied into place.
5. Make the connections. We prep and flare the fittings, then connect to the electrical end of the existing unit.
6. Test for leaks. We dial in the refrigerant pressures and pressurize with nitrogen to make sure there are no leaks.

Before you add another room

A few things decide how smooth a second head unit will go:

• The existing system. Whether your current outdoor unit can take another head unit depends on the equipment, so we confirm that before any work starts.
• Wall placement. The unit needs a spot where it can be mounted level, anchored securely, and centered on the wall.
• Drain path. The pipe hole has to slope correctly so condensation drains away.
• Line set route. The new line set needs a clean path down the exterior wall to tie in with the existing one.
